JIM LEE Redesigns BOO BERRY … No, Really

DC already has a series of Monster variant covers planned for their October-shipping titles , but you can add three more to the mix.

According to USA Today, DC and General Mills are teaming up to redesign the classic characters of General Mills ‘Monster’ series – Boo Berry, Franken Berry and Count Chocula, when the food giant rereleases the cereals for Halloween this fall.

The three cereal brands that originated in the 70s haven’t been on sale year around since 2010. General Mills now releases them nationwide beginning in September and running through Halloween.

Lee redesigned Boo Berry for the limited edition box art, Dave Johnson did Franken Berry, and Terry and Rachel Dodson teamed for Count Chocula.

"I have a lot of highlights in my career that have nothing to do with superheroes. This is definitely one of them," said the DC co-publisher, who told USA Today Boo Berry was his preferred cereal when he was a kid.

"I loved the milk turning blue afterward, and it brought back a lot of childhood memories."

Lee told the national newspaper he has an emotional connection to Boo Berry, so tweaking his design proved more difficult that he thought he would, and he worked through several drafts before coming up with a final product.

"I put a lot of thought in it. It was stressful," Lee said. "Drawing simpler characters is a lot more work and harder than drawing something that's more complicated or has a lot of renderings. Every line counts and every distance between the eyes and the ears, it's all super critical."

Apparently Fruit Brute and Yummy Mummy didn’t make the cut this year.
